New England Vampire Panic - Supernatural back in the day!

With October and spooky season 2021, we are going to be doing a little special on the blog with I guess what would be the spooky classics. So today, we are going to talk about vampires for a bit.

Where this is going down: Rhode Island, Vermont, Connecticut

Occasionally spreading to other areas very close to these areas. Our story takes place in the 19th century.

This was essentially the reaction to the tuberculosis pandemic, as no one understood what it was or what to do.

The disease was referred to as consumption at this time. The thought at the time was that consumption was caused by dead relatives basically draining the life of the living from the grave.

This was basically their COVID back in the day. Tuberculosis still occasionally turns up, but back around this time the disease was running rampant.

People who had died of the disease would be exhumed and then examined. Concern would be raised if a deceased person, after being dug back up, appeared to be in better condition than expected.

Keep in mind though, the body very well may have been kept cold under the ground at this time. This would slow down the rate of decomposition of course.

An attempt to remedy this would be to turn the body over in the grave, rebury it, and then hope for the best.

In some cases, the family members would instead remove the organs, decapitate the head, and burn it. They would then proceed to INHALE the smoke or EAT the ashes. Of course that probably worked great for curing illness.

The whole vampire term didn’t really come up until after the news in other areas picked up on it. Then it was deemed vampires. At this time, the term vampire wasn’t really known to people in this area who were experiencing this.

The people at the time thought it was something supernatural going on, but not exactly vampire per se.
